Inspirational Ink: Insight for a Woman’s Life

by Tammi Ector Fisse

Cinderella and I have more in common than our appreciation of the right shoe. Often throughout my life I’ve felt like an unloved stepsister. Today, as I take the next step on my career path (first day on my new job), I feel like a queen. When I started out in the early childhood field five years ago, I was told by a manager of the wicked variety that I needed to work several more years before I would be qualified to take on a leadership position. (The fact that I was already working as an elementary teacher when she was still in elementary school didn’t seem to count for much in her estimation). Two months after that conversation, I became a center director for the nation’s largest childcare provider. Now four years later, our region’s leading early childhood resource and referral agency has made me a specialist. I’ll be writing and presenting workshops for parents and professional development trainings for program administrators. In all likelihood, the above mentioned former employer may end up attending a few of my sessions. Talk about the tables being turned.
