Embracing Life’s Detours

by Chere Williams

Recently, I visited my family in Pittsburgh which is a four hour drive from where I live. Since I visit frequently, the four hour ride is not in the least bit a nuisance to me. However, this particular visit when I was leaving to return home, part of the Turnpike I have to travel to get home was shut down because of an accident. I had to take a detour. The detour was a route I never drove before and needless to say, it was long! It was one lane for two hours through the Allegheny Mountains and various small towns. I became increasingly frustrated as the ride grew longer and slower. I was accustomed to my four hour drive with plenty of lanes and not many surprises. I wasn’t appreciating this detour that was taking me down curvy country roads with no end in sight. After a while, I realized being annoyed wouldn’t get me home any quicker and I decided to make the best out of a different route.
